Industry NewsLondis becomes UCD GAA title sponsor across five codes
Londis has become the new title sponsor of UCD GAA in a two-year partnership, placing the convenience retail brand on the jerseys of the club’s football, hurling, camogie, ladies’ football and handball teams and connecting a community-led positioning with 18 teams competing each week in one of third-level sport’s most successful Gaelic Games programmes. UCD GAA brings together players from clubs and counties across the island of Ireland, creating what the university describes as a home away from home for students.
Londis is an Irish convenience retail symbol group of 140 independently operated stores, run under the Local Like You positioning and operated by BWG Foods, based in Tallaght, Dublin. It does not publicly disclose turnover.
UCD GAA is the Gaelic games club of University College Dublin in Belfield, founded unofficially in 1900, with its official history beginning in 1911/12. Over more than 125 years it has won 34 Sigerson Cup, 32 Fitzgibbon Cup and 35 Ashbourne Cup titles.
Conor Hayes, sales director at Londis, said: “We’re delighted to come on board as title sponsor of UCD GAA.” He added that being local and part of the community is at the heart of everything Londis does, and that UCD GAA is a community in its own right, bringing together students from every county in Ireland.
Ger Brennan, executive at UCD GAA, said the club has a proud tradition across football, hurling, camogie and handball, that partners like Londis allow it to keep giving players the support they need to perform on the pitch while making the most of their time in college, and that Londis shares its values of community and belonging.
Electric Ireland sponsors the national higher education competitions UCD plays in, including the Sigerson Cup, according to GAA.ie, so Londis takes the club-level title position beneath an existing competition sponsor.
UCD has won the Sigerson Cup 34 times, the most of any university, according to Wikipedia.
For the sector, the title deal shows a convenience symbol group matching its local-community positioning to a university club that gathers players from every county.
