Tesco Ireland sponsors programme to boost sustainable beef production
Tesco Ireland has committed to sponsoring the ABP Bull Improvement Initiative, providing €20,000 per year for two years to help Irish family farms purchase superior bulls with high genetic merit. The sponsorship directly supports improved herd performance, reduced environmental impact, and more sustainable beef production.
Data from ABP’s trial farm, validated by the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, shows calves from top-ranking bulls are on average 38kg heavier and worth €301 more than lower-merit calves at the same age. Faster growth also reduces the carbon footprint, demonstrating measurable sustainability benefits.
Tracey McDermott, Head of Quality, Technical & Sustainability at Tesco Ireland, said the sponsorship complements the company’s sustainability strategy, supporting farmers to produce better beef with lower environmental impact. Stephen Connolly, ABP Agri Sustainability Manager, added that the initiative strengthens both beef and dairy sectors by improving animal efficiency and commercial value.
Tesco’s funding highlights how corporate sponsorship can directly drive agricultural innovation and environmental stewardship, aligning commercial interests with sustainable outcomes.
