Industry NewsLloyds becomes England Rugby's first back-of-shirt sponsor
Lloyds Bank has become England Rugby's first-ever back-of-shirt sponsor under a multi-year principal partnership with the Rugby Football Union, reportedly worth £5 million a season, marking a new revenue stream for the union by monetising a kit asset never previously sold. The bank's black horse logo will appear above player names on the men's and women's senior shirts, anthem jackets and training bibs, debuting when the Red Roses face Australia in Manchester this weekend. Lloyds also becomes England Rugby's official banking partner, with the partnership committing to invest in grassroots clubs, community facilities and youth participation, with further project details due in 2027.
Lloyds Bank is a UK retail and commercial bank and part of Lloyds Banking Group, one of Britain's largest financial services groups, recognisable by its black horse logo.
RFU is the Rugby Football Union, the governing body for rugby union in England, whose senior sponsorship portfolio already includes O2 as front-of-shirt partner for 30 years and Allianz's 10-year naming rights deal for Twickenham signed in 2024.
The deal creates an entirely new commercial asset for the RFU rather than replacing an existing one, adding Lloyds alongside O2's long-running front-of-shirt position rather than competing with it for the same shirt space.
RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said the partnership marks an important moment for rugby in England, describing Lloyds as one of the country's most recognised and proudly British brands whose commitment extends far beyond visibility on the shirt, and pointing to a shared ambition to grow the game from grassroots.
Lloyds chief marketing officer Suresh Balaji said rugby sits at the heart of communities across Britain, and that seeing the bank's black horse on the England shirt for the first time was a proud moment reflecting its roots in those same communities.
For the sector, the deal reflects a wider pattern of banks entering rugby sponsorship in categories other clubs and unions had already priced into shirt deals; RFU commercial leadership has described the back-of-shirt position as a valuable asset for media exposure that comes bundled with digital rights and community activation commitments, rather than pure visibility alone.
