Industry NewsBOYLE Sports marks 13th year as Irish Greyhound Derby sponsor
BOYLE Sports' title sponsorship of the Irish Greyhound Derby reaches its 13th consecutive year as the final takes place at Shelbourne Park this weekend, giving the bookmaker sustained visibility at the sporting and commercial high point of the greyhound racing calendar. The six-week campaign, which began in early August, culminates in a live one-hour Virgin Media Two broadcast hosted by Ivan Yates, with the winning greyhound collecting a €125,000 prize. The current agreement, signed in 2023, runs through this year's competition.
BOYLE Sports is a Dundalk-based bookmaker founded in 1982, operating as Ireland's largest independently owned betting company with more than 390 shops across Ireland and the UK. The company has also sponsored the Champion Stakes at Shelbourne Park and holds front-of-shirt sponsorship of West Ham United.
Greyhound Racing Ireland is the semi-state body responsible for regulating and promoting greyhound racing on the island of Ireland, formerly known as Bord na gCon and headquartered at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. The organisation receives annual state funding of close to €20 million and reported 351,637 attendances in 2025, a figure that includes owners, trainers and bookmakers alongside paying spectators.
The relationship's longevity is notable in a sponsorship market where multi-year deals rarely extend past three or four years without renegotiation; BOYLE Sports has now held the Derby title for 13 straight years, making any renewal beyond this year's final a live commercial question for the sector.
This year's activation extends beyond conventional title branding through the inaugural BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Celebrity Commentator Challenge, in which former Dublin footballer Diarmuid Connolly and Cork's Eoin Cadogan trained as race commentators, with the winning caller's identity held back for the live Final broadcast.
The Derby also showcases Greyhound Racing Ireland's €5 million Shelbourne Park redevelopment, completed in 2024, adding a sports bar, lounge, terrace and food hall aimed at growing hospitality revenue rather than relying on ticket sales alone.
For the sector, the Derby illustrates how a single flagship betting sponsorship can anchor a broader commercial portfolio spanning welfare, community and stadium partnerships, even as the industry's attendance figures, boosted by the inclusion of racing personnel in official counts, remain a point of public scrutiny given the scale of state funding involved.
