Industry NewsBanks Group backs 193rd Durham Regatta as principal sponsor in 50th anniversary year
North East-based property, housebuilding and mining firm the Banks Group has been confirmed as a principal sponsor of the 193rd Durham Regatta, aligning its 50th anniversary year with one of the north of England's most historic and prestigious rowing events as it returns to the banks of the River Wear on 13 and 14 June.
Durham Magazine reported that the Banks Group's financial contribution has enabled organisers to hold competition entry fees and Regatta Enclosure ticket prices at the same level as last year, while also providing dedicated funding for the event's Volunteer Hub, which coordinates the activities and welfare of volunteers across the weekend.
First held in 1834, Durham Regatta is regarded as the north of England's premier rowing event, attracting entries from schools, universities and rowing clubs across the UK. Around 2,000 competitors are set to take part in 200 races each day, with more than 10,000 spectators expected to line the riverbank over the two days.
Michael Laing, chairman of the Durham Regatta committee, said both the Regatta and the Banks Group are longstanding County Durham institutions and that the organisation is very pleased to have them as one of this year's event sponsors, noting that the Regatta aims to make participation as accessible as possible regardless of competitors' backgrounds.
Kate Culverhouse, community relations manager at the Banks Group, described Durham Regatta as one of the highlights of County Durham's sporting calendar and said the firm is very pleased to be lending its support to a community event that offers something for everyone.
